Gérard AUDRAN (Lyon 1640 - Paris 1703) "La Descente du Saint Esprit" (Pentecost) Original etching and engraving from a subject by Charles LeBrun, published and sold by Audran himself at the Parisian address of his shop "rue S .Jacques au deux piliers d'or ”between 1690 and 1699, dating from the presence of the dedication to Edouard Colbert in the office of Prefect of the Royal Buildings which he held at that time. Beautiful specimen with uncut margins, printed on a portion of laid paper bearing "Piccola Colombaia" watermark and Dupuys Auvergne counter-brand, attributable to French paper production of the 18th century, slightly burnished and with various small defects on the large white edges but overall in good condition. On the reverse there is the ink stamp of the eighteenth-century Bullinger collection (Lugt 3292). The copper plate engraved by Audran is now preserved in the chalcography of the Louvre. The original LeBrun painting had been made between 1656 and 1657 for the Seminary of Saint Sulpice in Paris and today is part of the Louvre collections. Bibliography: Duplessis "Les Audran" Paris sd Pages 19 - 36.
